lapel badges and avatars
Something happened last night that I have been waiting for for quite a while. It might not seem that significant but I was interested when it would happen.
@timoreilly’s twitter avatar stopped being green.
Tim (and many many other twitterers) added a green tint to their avatar to pledge their support for the pro-democracy movement in Iran. Now I don’t believe that:
- Iran has been reformed to the point of what us westerners feel is a real democracy
- Tim O’Reilly has decided that he no longer supports the cause
This kind of cause pledging or statement of support used to be done by adding another badge to your jacket lapel (at least they were at my school) but obviously with so little space on his avatar to pledge his support, Tim has to decide between causes.
There is now a service available (twibbon.com) that allows you to create a badge or ‘twibbon’ and add it to your twitter avatar but that doesn’t tell you which badges to display when or how to decide whether to remove a badge. It also doesn’t seem to let me set a list of my supported causes or allow me to allocate time slots to each of my causes.
