Aloha Technophobia

09/12/2010

A lot has happened since I dressed up in a bright green pimp suit last December for the Christmas party. Projects have been completed, new ones begun, we've employed more of the best digital minds in the UK and somehow we managed to find time to squeeze in a rebrand! So it was nice to be able to relax and reflect on another successful year for Technophobia last Friday at the 2010 Christmas party.

Despite the problems caused by the weather, there was a surprisingly good turn out and everyone thoroughly enjoy themselves. Whilst we were all grateful to be treated to a fantastic night out, I can't help feeling that our Health and Safety representatives weren't present at the planning meetings. They do say hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I'm inclined to agree for the following reasons...

  • The party was held in a bar situated on what is possibly one of the steepest hills in Sheffield. In the ice.
  • There were stairs down into the bar (although some of us did eventually discover the lift!)
  • The staff were handing out drinks vouchers like they were going out of fashion, just yards away from the mechanical surfboard. (If you're wondering why this could be a problem, have a look at this video I captured)
  • It was a Hawaiian themed party in sub-zero temperatures. Costumes included:
    Shorts and t-shirt
    Summery dress
    Wet suit
    Flippers

Rather surprisingly there were no serious injuries and after a rough headcount this afternoon, I’m pretty sure there are no frozen Technophobes slowly thawing out somewhere in Sheffield, so all in all it was a successful night.

For some people the night ended at around 10.30pm as they begun their long journeys home. For others it ended around 5am in Napoleons Casino - the less said about that the better!
